Loan Road blackspot ‘is potentially deadly’

Fears are growing that an accident blackspot on a rural road near Cullybackey could be the scene of a fatality if action is not taken.

In recent months, thee have been a series of crashes on what has been termed a ‘hazardous corner’ on Loan Road, outside the village.

Now the case has been raised by Bannside TUV Councillor, Timothy Gaston who feels that urgent steps are required to limit the potential dangers.

He said: “My attention has been drawn to the problems at Loan Road. This is a corner which has a bad reputation locally and unless some form of action is taken it could acquire an even worse one.

“In recent times a number of vehicles have gone off the road and ended up in the field of a local farmer.

“This is particularly concerning because there is a significant drop between the road and the field and the landowner is concerned that someone could well end up being seriously injured or worse.

Police have even witnessed the telegraph pole being smashed when they were on site.

“Some drivers who have gone off the road have just driven through the field and back onto the carriageway causing damage to the farmer’s property, particularly his hedging, and is an ongoing danger to livestock.

“In light of all the accidents I feel this corner would merit investment to make it safer for users. Therefore I have therefore written to Transport NI asking them to erect a crash barrier, upgrade warning signage on both sides and highlight the corner with road markings.”
