Local chippies urged to enter 'The Oscars'

FISH and chip shops across Northern Ireland are being encouraged to enter the local chippy equivalent of the Oscars.

The competition to find the number one fish and chip outlet, being run by Seafish, the Government-appointed authority for seafood, was launched last Tuesday at the Fish and Chicken Inn in Ballymena.

The Ballymena chippy is the current holder of the title. Owner Brian Surgenor said: “Winning the regional title has had a great effect on our business and has been especially good this year as it’s helped counteract some of the impact of the recession.

Fish and chips are a true icon and will always have a special place in the hearts of Brits. The popularity of this competition with the general public goes to show that there is a great future in store for the industry.”

Brian is urging all Northern Irish fish and chip shops to enter after seeing a 20 per cent increase in business since receiving the award in December.

Now in its 23rd year, the competition has a new look. There is a new microsite – www.fishandchips.com – dedicated to the awards offering friers information and downloadable entry forms.

The judging process has also been revamped making the first round a paper judging round, followed by two further rounds of judging visits.
