Locals honoured at Hillsborough

Two local people have been honoured at a formal ceremony at Hillsborough Castle, receiving some of the highest accolades that can be conferred on members of the Reserve Forces and Cadet movements.

The Lord Lieutenant’s Certificate for Outstanding Meritorious Service Above and Beyond the Call of Duty – an award which is second in importance only to one presented by Her Majesty The Queen – was presented to Corporal Diane Young who serves with the Royal Irish Regiment.

At the same ceremony Ballymena teenager, Cadet Staff Sergeant Eve Matthewson was appointed to the role of Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for the County of Antrim.

The 16-year-old Cambridge House student, will be one of nine Lord Lieutenants’ Cadets across Northern Ireland, taking on a role which is largely ceremonial.

She can expect a busy year ahead, attending Mrs Joan Christie OBE, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for the County of Antrim, on major civic occasions. In recognition of the award, Eve will wear a special insignia on her uniform throughout her year in office.
