Magnificent seven bound for Cambodia

On August 12, seven girls from Ballymena will be setting off to Cambodia. A lot of people are asking why and I will tell you, writes Megan Phair.

There are 36.8 Million slaves in the world - this figure is higher than the amount of slaves there were when slavery was legal.

Ashley Jackson, Chloe Loughridge, Emma Davison, Lauren Agnew, Melissa Campbell, Rachel Rusk and myself all have a passion to make this figure zero.

We are heavily involved in our local ‘Stop The Traffik’ groups which are part of the bigger Northern Ireland based No More Traffik. This is a motivating factor to why we are going.

Cambodia is an extremely impoverished place where it isn’t unknown for parents to sell their young sons and daughters for exploitation to provide for the rest of the family; they don’t have a choice.

Poverty is crippling them and making them feel as though there is no way out so people sell themselves or their children hoping to get the business of some rich western men.

We will be interns at The Hard Places Community and this work will involve us coming alongside women and children, listening to their stories, doing craft, having fun, teaching English and prayer-walking on the red light district.

We of course have concerns about safety but we aren’t overly fearful.

We trust that God has called us to this work and will be with us. The other concern is the rats the size of cats, I think.

We expect God to move mightily to use us in whatever way he sees fit, we want to give survivors a voice and love them.

Prayer points are for safety as we travel and stay in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, for the hearts of the women and children we will be working with that they would experience restoration and life in its fullness.

Pray for the work of The Hard Places Community - they work with men, women and children and do an amazing job.

Finally, pray for ‘team unity’ that we would really be able to read each other and support one another.
