Man believed he was insured to drive under existing policy

A BALLYMENA motorist believed he was insured for a vehicle he had bought under his insurance policy for an existing vehicle, the local Magistrates Court was told.

Robert Andrew Mark (21), of Inchkeith Road, was banned from driving for two weeks and fined a total of 350 after admitting charges of speeding, no insurance and failing to display ‘R’ plates.

The court was told that Mark came to police attention driving at 63mph in a 40mph zone at Larne Road Link on November 22.

Solicitor David McIlrath said Mark had purchased the vehicle and had gone to collect it in Cullybackey, believing that he was covered to drive under an insurance policy for a different vehicle.

Noting that Mark was an ‘R’ driver, and therefore restricted to 45mph, District Judge Des Perry said: “He was breaking two speed limits.”
