Television’s toughest obstacle course arrived on British TV at the weekend and a young man from Ballymena proved he’s up to the challenge.
Matt Akerfeldt was the first competitor to successfully complete the ‘Ninja Warrior UK’ course and did so in just two minutes five seconds, guaranteeing him a place in the semi-final. Originally from Germany, Matt, lives in Ballymena and is a former pupil of Slemish College.
Inspired by Sasuke, the renowned Japanese TV show that has been going since 1997, Ninja Warrior UK, began on ITV on Saturday night and over the course of the eight-part series, 250 ambitious contestants will take on the challenge.
Matt is one of the 250 competitors from around the UK who during the series will tackle the first heat, which has six obstacles that include ‘dancing stones’ and ‘a curtain swing’ - all against the clock.
As a semi-finalist he will face nine obstacles - again with a time limit - for the chance to reach the final and be the UK’s first Ninja Warrior.
Speaking to host Ben Shephard, after getting through the first heat, Matt admitted: “It felt tough...that was not easy”.
