The event in April is being part of a programme of events for the Mayor’s chosen charity, Alzheimer’s Society.

“Are you brave enough to step into the fire for the Alzheimer’s Society?” Cllr. Ashe said.

He added: ““I am urging as many people as possible to join me in supporting this worthy cause and am even offering an ‘early bird’ bonus entry.”

The first 25 participants to sign up will get their registration fee free of charge compliments of the Mayor. Subsequent participants submit a £20 registration fee.

This unique event will take place on Friday, April 15 between 7pm and 10pm and the information pack explains how to take part, what to expect on the day, and includes a sponsorship form to help raise much needed funds for Alzheimer’s Society.

Participants are expected to raise a minimum of £100 sponsorship.

Cllr. Ashe added: “You do not walk through actual flames but on a fire bed itself, which are the red-hot glowing embers of the wood, although you may see some flames at the side of the bed.

“The sensation is described by some as walking on eggshells or hot sand; each walker has their own experience. It is not known for walkers to feel pain, indeed many experienced walkers choose to walk across up to four times, though I’ll be content with just the once!

“It should take only four to six steps. As the fire bed is normally only about three metres long and one metre wide.

“This will be an inspirational and barrier-breaking experience for everyone joining me, while raising money for a fantastic cause.”
