McCoy reveals family’s pride at Knighthood honour

AP McCoy has said his family are “hugely proud” after he was awarded a Knighthood in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.

The Moneyglass man has enjoyed the staunch of supporters of his wife Chanelle and their two children, along with that of father Peadar, mother Claire, brother Colm and sisters Kelly, Trina, Ann-Marie and Roisin throughout his glittering career.

“I think they’re going to be hugely proud,” said the 20-times champion jockey.

“We come from a very close family and my mother is very proud and also my dad.

“I was very humbled when I heard the news – I never thought it was something that would ever happen to me.

“It’s great for myself but I think it’s great for the game of racing.

“I’m really looking forward to going to Buckingham Palace, it’s something I feel very proud of.

Her Majesty is someone who is very knowledgeable about our sport and we’re very lucky to have her involvement in racing and I’ll feel very honoured and very proud when I go there.”

When asked how his accolade will be received among other jockeys, AP joked: “There’s a few of them I’m definitely going to make them call me sir!

“But I think even the lads in the weigh room will be pretty pleased for me,” he added.
