McNeill claims victory at Galgorm Castle

AT the halfway stage in the Low Section of the Winter Sweep, held at Galgorm Castle Golf Club, Jonathan McNeill had a two point advantage over Lyle Foster with Jonathan Rodgers and Colin Steel another point behind.

Approaching 13, McNeill still had a two point lead from Foster who was joined by Steel with Rodgers still a further point behind.

Through Beechers and with three holes to play, McNeill still led by two points from Steel with Foster stalling at Beechers with a bogey, another two popints adrift. Rodgers was still lying handy in fourth position another point away but unable to move up closer to the leaders.

McNeill held onto his two point lead for victory when he came home with three pars. Rodgers, with a magnificent late run of three birdies, joined Foster (three pars) at the finish and with a better back nine, Rodgers claimed second place with Foster third. Steel (two pars and a bogey) finished another point behind.

George Watt and Alan Knox were vying for the lead at the turn in the High Section but were being hard pressed by a trio of players – William Wilson, Ivan McCappin and Joseph Barr – one point behind.

Wilson started the back nine with a run of a birdie and two pars to lead after 13 by one point from Watt who in turn was two points ahead of Barr with McCappin and Knox (let down by bogey trouble on 11 and 12) at one point intervals respectively behind.

Approaching three out, Wilson was joined by Watt with McCappin moving into third position three points behind. Barr and Knox were another point astray.

Wilson and Watt were still level on points at the finish but with a better back nine Wilson finished in first place with Watt second.

In the race for third place McCappin finished par, bogey, Barr (two bogeys) and Knox (par, double bogey), leaving McCappin third two points behind Watt and two points clear of Barr and Knox.

David Kernohan won the gross prize with 42 points.

HOLE-IN-ONE

Congratulations to James A Logan who joined the ‘one’ club when he holed his tee shot on the par three 14th.
