Michelin men take Everest challenge by climbing Slemish 20 times in a row!

A four-man fundraising team from Ballymena are well on their way to raising an amazing £3,000 having climbed Slemish 20 times for Cancer Research UK.

The Conquer Cancer Challenge team of Martin McAuley, Bert Purdy, Adam Devenny and Andy Tuff - who all work for Michelin, decided they would like to climb the equivalent of Mt. Everest (approximately 29,000ft) and did so on Saturday, August 25, by scaling Slemish a staggering 20 times.

The team was supported by a steady stream of family and friends throughout the day who brought food and drink and helped keep up morale.

Event organiser, Martin McAuley explained why they wanted to take on the challenge: “Mt. Everest is almost 30,000 ft high and until 1953 it had never been conquered but in that year Tenzin Norgay and Edmund Hillary completed the challenge. Cancer is still yet to be conquered but like Everest it will be beaten. To attempt this task we wanted to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer.

“Our event has been a great success. We have been humbled by people’s generosity. The support has been awesome.”

Sarah Davis, Area Volunteer Manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “Cancer Research UK spent more than £2 million last year in Northern Ireland on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research. For example, Belfast is home to one of our Cancer Research UK Centres.

“The Belfast Centre brings together scientists, doctors and nurses from across the city. Researchers at the Belfast Centre are building on their existing strengths in research – turning discoveries made in the lab into new, more effective ways to detect, monitor and treat people with cancer.
