According to the Northern Division annual Report for Mid & East Antrim during the winter of 2015/16 the equivalent of 82 full salting actions were carried out on the 614km of road on the borough’s nine gritting routes.

A total of 7,112 tonnes of salt was used over that period compared to 8,628 tons for the 2014/15 season.

Presenting the report to the latest meeting of Mid & East Antrim Council’s Community Planning meeting Northern Division’s Network Development Manager Alan Keys said winter 2015/16 was the third-warmest for the UK in a series from 1910, resulting in less salt being used.
