He said: “We have fantastic beaches in East Antrim which attract tens of thousands from the local area and further afield during the summer months.

“I have been contacted by a number of local people who are concerned about the lack of access to the beaches for people with disabilities.

“At present, wheelchair users often have to stay in carparks and are unable to join their families on the beach and that is simply not good enough.

“Boardwalks could be installed on the beaches so that they are accessible for everyone. This approach has been used very successfully in other countries and has resulted in increased numbers using beaches.

“I am calling on the Causeway Coast and Glens Council and Mid and East Antrim Council to look at installing boardwalks on beaches under their control.

“Tourism is vital to the economy of the East Antrim area and I want to see as many people as possible being able to enjoy the excellent attractions we have on offer.”
