MLA raises alarm on local pupils’ safety

The DUP Assemblyman has again raised concerns on behalf of parents over speeding traffic near and around the school and says he is “determined to see something done” to slow down passing motorists.

“I contacted Transport NI asking them what traffic calming measures were being considered to slow vehicles down near the school with the response that a survey had been undertaken on the adjacent Dreen Road to establish vehicular speeds travelling in both directions,” he said.

“They informed me after considering the results that, given no personal injury accidents had been recorded within the last three year period, Transport NI had no plans to introduce additional traffic calming measures anytime soon.”

“I am very disappointed with this stance,” Mr Frew said.

He added: “The traffic witnessed here is an increasing issue and many more people are beginning to report it to me. Something should be done before someone gets hurt. It is terrible that the number of accidents or the lack of them are seen as the defining criteria for the lack of action. Last thing we need is for an accident to happen before danger is realised which we have seen happen in previous cases.

“I am going to continue pressing this issue with Transport NI as the safety of local school pupil should be one of our main priorities,” he said.
