MP welcomes Whitesides Road improvements

WORK is underway to significantly improve road safety at one of the borough's most notorious accident blackspots.

The programme being rolled out by Roads Service at Whitesides Road has been welcomed by Ian Paisley MP.

It will involve the implementation of a series of measures along the entire length of the road with specific measures dedicated to a series of bends which have been the scene of traffic collisions over the years.

These will include - a review of all traffic signs including their upgrading where necessary and the provision of additional signs where considered beneficial; provision of central ladder hatched road markings through Whitesides Corner which will prohibit overtaking and improve conditions for motorists turning right off Whitesides Road into Ahoghill Road and Glebe Road; refreshing road markings from Whitesides Corner to Largy road including the provision of new edge lining; application of High Friction Surfacing to the series of bends to address loss of control type collisions; installation of reflective marker posts around one particular bend; and, consideration of improvements to the current road drainage systems to address the problem of water flowing across the carriageway.

In a recent letter to Mr Paisley about the measures, Jackson Minford of Traffic Management in Roads Service Northern Division pointed out: “Work is already underway on the upgrade of the traffic signs with the remainder of the work following on shortly”.

Mr Paisley told The Ballymena Times: “I find this a very helpful response by the Roads Service and has addressed a number of points raised by myself and other MLA’s in both South Antrim and in North Antrim areas”.
