North Antrim bikers pack Clough annual service

MOTORCYCLE enthusiasts from across North Antrim and Belfast packed St James' Parish Church of Ireland in Clough village recently for the annual service hosted by the Mid Antrim Motor Cycle Club.

The traditional service takes place on the Sunday before the Mid Antrim 150 road races. The congregation was welcomed to St James’ by Mr John Swan, the Rector’s Churchwarden.

Among the guests were 1965 Ulster Grand Prix and North West 200 winner Mr Richard Creith; 1982 Ulster Grand Prix winner Mr Paul Cranston; and Kells and Connor Community Association representative Mr Robin Swann. The Association recently hosted the Kells To Kells motorbike event.

The St James’ service was conducted by Rev Dr Robert Coulter MBE MLA, Chaplain to the Mid Antrim Motor Cycle Club, and the former minister of Clough Presbyterian Church.

The Old Testament reading from Isaiah Chapter 40 was taken by Mr Cranston and the New Testament reading from First Timothy Chapter One was taken by Mr David Graham, the Assistant Clerk of the Mid Antrim 150 Course.

The Holy Gospel reading from St Matthews was taken by Mr John Swan. The offering went to St James’ church.

In his address, Rev Dr Coulter said: “Life is like a race in which we all take part. In many races, newcomers to the tracks are given the opportunity to get to know the course by an experienced master.

“If we are to make a success of life’s race, we must follow the Master, Jesus Christ. As we face life’s daily situations and challenges, we can turn to Him in prayer.

“We also have a responsibility to help those who follow us. And like the bike racers, we must obey the rules of life’s race,” said Rev Dr Coulter.

After the service, the congregation enjoyed refreshments served in the nearby Clough Masonic Hall.
