Parades and marching in focus at Braid exhibition

A NEW exhibition aimed at supporting the exploration of parades, marches and processions as a shared local tradition historically and currently has just been launched in Ballymena.

The Mayor, Cllr Hubert Nicholl attended the Mid-Antrim Museum at The Braid for the unveiling of ‘Walking The Colours’.

It’s the first of several Cultural Fusions PEACE III 2011-13 projects to be delivered across the North East Clusters of Councils which includes Ballymena and the material on display will enable learning and sharing of knowledge around the visual representations of local identity.

The successful launch featured contributions from a group of speakers including Delia Close, Social Partner on the North East PEACE III Partnership and member of the Parades Commission.

Speakers recognised the importance of community engagement in the development of an exhibition of this nature and commended the local Orders including Ancient Order of Hibernians (Randalstown), The Royal Black Encampment and John Calvin Memorial Independent Orange Lodge who each worked with Mid-Antrim Museum Service to identify content for this exhibition.

A Walking the Colours workshop designed to support dialogue around sensitive issues and multi perspectives on parading will also be delivered in different venues as this exhibition travels to Coleraine Town Hall, Donegal County Museum, Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre in Limavady and to Monaghan County Museum.

The learning and sharing of perspectives that will take place during engagement with the exhibition and in workshops will contribute towards one of the PEACE III Programmes key objectives; building understanding and respect between communities.
