Ballyclare Army cadet supporting rescued dogs

Tamzin McNeilly (16), who is working towards her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, has been crafting bedding for rescued dogs at local animal shelters as part of her volunteering.

The Moorfields resident, who is a former pupil at Ballyclare Secondary School, has used a sewing machine to make bedding for the rescued dogs.

So far, the kindhearted teen has made donations to the Dogs Trust and Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary.

Praising Tamzin’s efforts, Major John F Read C Company Commander 1st Northern Ireland Battalion Army Cadet Force said: “The Army Cadet Force’s motto is - To Inspire to Achieve and Cadet Lance Corporal Tamzin McNeilly is a shinning example of this.”

1 NI ACF recently announced that the Lord Lieutenant of Co Antrim, Mr David McCorkell is their new Honorary Colonel.

Mr McCorkell took to social media to congratulate Tamzin.

He said: “Well done Tamzin and good luck with the Gold

Duke of Edinburgh Award.”

Tamzin’s sister, Alisha, has recently gained her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award through the Army Cadet Force.

Speaking to the Times, their mother Sheree said: “I am extremely proud of their dedication. The cadets is a fantastic hobby for them.

“It has given them great drive and they have really enjoyed working towards their awards.

“Tamzin has always loved dogs and she has enjoyed making the bedding for the rescued dogs at the shelters.”

The cadets are currently not meeting face-to-face due to the coronavirus restrictions, but they do meet regularly via Zoom and would love to see new members.
