General Sir James Steele (1895-1975), from Ballycarry, who was responsible for the mobilisation arrangements for the whole British Army at the start of the war, Larne Nursing Division, a Home Guard parade and distribution of gas mask at Carrickfergus Town Hall are just some of the old photos featured as Mid and East Antrim Council prepares to mark the end of the Second World War with an online programme of events.

A council spokesperson said: “As we look forward to commemorating #VEDay75, it is only appropriate to look back at history and to those who gave so much in World War II.

“Our museum staff in Ballymena, Carrickfergus and Larne have found some wonderful images and information for you to browse through in our virtual exhibition: midandeastantrim.gov.uk/events/veday75#Exhibition.”
