PSNI investigating ‘**** the Pope’ announcement at Tesco store serve notice on man who accessed tannoy system

A 24-year-old man has been identified after he shouted ‘**** the Pope’ into a public tannoy at Tesco in Ballymena.

The incident happened on October 13 at the Larne Link Road store in front of horrified shoppers.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Police in Ballymena have identified a 24 year old male in relation to an incident involving a youth accessing the tannoy system at a shop on the Larne Link Road in Ballymena on Tuesday 13th October.

“He has since been issued with a Community Resolution Notice.”

At the time stunned shoppers told the News Letter they were left shocked after the abusive message - announced over the company tannoy system in Ballymena on Tuesday night.

And at the time a PSNI spokesman said: “Police in Ballymena received a report of an incident at a shop on the Larne Link Road in Ballymena on Tuesday 13th October,” he said.

“It was reported that a male youth accessed the Tannoy system at around 10.20pm on Tuesday evening and shouted a sectarian comment.

“Enquiries into the matter are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police in Ballymena on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 643 14/10/20. “

A Tesco spokesperson also then said: “We are aware of an incident that took place at our superstore in Ballymena yesterday evening and have reported this to the police.”
