Police issue bogus caller alert

INFORMATION is being sought from the public by Ballymena PSNI investigating two reports of possible bogus callers operating in the borough.

A red van was seen in the Liminary Road, Ballymena area on Tuesday, April 24, acting suspiciously.

A police spokesperson said that two men were paying close attention to properties in the area, and when confronted they asked if the person would like his roof cleaned.

A similar incident was reported to police at the Ballymontenagh Road, in the Gracehill area, the following day, April 25.

It was believed that a man was acting suspiciously and was later seen leaving the area in a blue transit van.

Police would ask the local community to be vigilant of this type of activity and to report anything of this nature to police.

Householders are being reminded to make it as difficult as possible for any person to break into their home. According to police, a burglar will select their target because it offers the best opportunity to carry out a crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles.

The most crucial thing is for householders to close and lock doors and windows when their home is vacant – and also at night - say police.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Good security can seem like a daunting prospect - in reality though it’s a matter of applying a common sense approach to securing your valuables – whether that’s your home or car.

“Think about ways burglars can get what they want, and what YOU can do to stop that.

“Why not conduct a brief risk assessment of your own home and re-evaluate your crime prevention routine? It will take a few minutes and should be well worth the effort if it makes the premises more secure and helps prevent the heartache and distress burglary causes”.
