Police probe fires in town centre

POLICE are investigating an incident in which two bins were set on fire in the Greenvale Street area of Ballymena during the early hours of last Tuesday morning.

The Fire and Rescue service had to be called to put out the fires police inquiries ongoing in relation to the incident.

The clean up operation got underway early on Tuesday morning with members of the council’s waste refusal team, having to scrape up the melted plastic and rubbish.

Last week the Times reported how police in Ballymena are investigating a spate of fires in and around the town and are seeking assistance in identifying a number of youths who started fires in bushes close to the tunnel at Dunvale.

However a police spokesperson confirmed that they are not able to link this weeks incident to last week's incident in Dunvale at this time.

Police are also investigating a number of gorse fires that took place last weekend, at the Ecos Centre; on waste ground at Cushendall Road; a gorse fire at Dunclug; a gorse fire at Barra Drive; and, a gorse fire at Harryville Motte.
