Carrick DUP man nominated to be next Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Council

DUP Knockagh Councillor Peter Johnston has been nominated by his party as the new Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

The election of a first citizen and deputy will take place this afternoon.

In a video posted on social media, Cllr Johnston said: “I am really excited to tell you, I have been nominated as the next mayor for Mid and East Antrim.

“I know the past few months have been challenging for us. However, it has been particularly encouraging to see how our community has come together to support those who need it most.

“I would like to particularly thank all our key workers and frontline staff in Mid and East Antrim and beyond.

“The virus has brought huge challenges for families and businesses from which we must recover in the coming months.

“During difficult times, the people of Northern Ireland have shown  they can stand strong and I am proud that our efforts have kept the virus to a minimum.

“Our focus must now switch to supporting our community as we begin  to recover. This will involve a collective effort from council, businesses community groups charities and each one of us

“The next 12 months will be momentous for Northern Ireland as we celebrate our centenary year and Mid and East Antrim will be at the forefront of the celebrations as we mark this historic occasion.

“I will be mayor for everyone in this borough. Together we must all put our shoulder to the wheel and build on the hard work to date.”

The outgoing mayor is Ulster Unionist Coast Road Councillor Maureen Morrow.
