to lack of grit

RESIDENTS in the Rosses have been left in a spin after last week's arctic conditions meant driving into and out of the estate a nightmare.

Those braving rush hour last week reported sitting for up to half an hour in queues to get out of the estate, with many left spinning their wheels due to the compacted snow leaving the road surface ‘like a bottle'.

"I was coming out of Rosses Lane to get onto the main road in and out of the estate on Wednesday morning and it was just a queue of cars," one lady told the Times.

She added: "Because there's an incline out of the estate to get onto the roundabout, you were having to take a run at and hoping that there was no other cars coming down the Tullygarley Road.

"If you had to stop at this point, you were stuck. Many, myself included, once they'd managed to get this far were left spinning our wheels because there the road was like a bottle and there was no grip.

"The problem is there is no grit box or even grit left nearby to grit this part of the estate.

"Thankfully a couple of gentlemen got out of cars further on down the queue and stopped traffic on the roundabout to try and get the vehicles moving."

However, she did have scathing words for a taxi driver caught up in the queue.

"There was car stuck at the exit, trying to get out but this taxi drive had the cheek to overtake everyone in the queue and cut round the vehicle.

"He nearly caused an accident because there was another vehicle coming into the estate at this point and they had to brake to avoid him."

Local councillor Neill Armstrong - who himself lives in the Rosses - was among the motorists caught up in Wednesday morning's traffic jam.

"The snow has been compacted down and it's just a sheet of ice throughout the whole estate but it's particularly worse at the exit," Cllr. Armstrong said.

He added that he had been in touch with the relevant authorities to see about getting a grit box and grit for the estate.
