Royal Birthday tea dance

The Braid in Ballymena will be the venue on Friday, May 27, for one in a series of royal celebration tea dances to mark the Queen's 90th birthday.

Numerous local nonagenarians will be attending after answering a call last month from the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Billy Ashe, to come forward and help celebrate the right royal occasion.

Celebratory tea dances are also being held in Larne and Carrickfergus and the event in The Braid on May 27 will run from 2-4pm when several local residents born in 1926 will be attending to help celebrate the royal birthday in suitable style.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has also already marked the actual 90th birthday on April 21 with a historic beacon-lighting ceremony at Fisherman’s Quay in Carrickfergus.

A number of churches in Carrick, Larne and Ballymena rang their bells at noon on the same day to mark the royal milestone.

Primary school children within the borough were also invited to take part in a competition, designing a birthday card, poster or poem.
