Shrubs get the chop at Ballykeel II estate

An area of overgrown shrubbery which had helped conceal illegal fly tipping down through the years has finally been cleared.

The overgrown stretch adjacent to the motorway at Ballykeel II housing estate had been causing concern to locals for a long time.

Virtually every piece of wind blown litter - from plastic bags to old papers - seemed to be caught up in the jungle like tangle of small shrubs and weeds.

Now, after a few ‘false starts’, the foliage has been cut back - to the delight of local residents.

Local councillor, Reuben Glover said the clearance work had come as a great relief to people living near the site.

He said: “This has been a long time coming. My party colleague, Paul Frew, had first contacted the Housing Executive on this matter.

“They had initially commenced work but had to halt due to budget pressures. It is good to see all works complete.”

Paul Frew, the North Antrim MLA commented: “I have spoken to some of the residents of Ballykeel 2 and they are over the moon.

“They had been worried about people fly tipping in the this area for many years and the problem with vermin that that was creating.

“I hope the Housing Executive will be able to maintain the area now as it will be much easier to manage.”
