Skatepark rolls nearer to final decision

SKATEBOARDERS and BMX bikers had something to ‘wheely’ celebrate last Wednesday night when councillors backed a recommendation to create a SkatePark in the town.

The proposal to go ahead with the venture came at the Development and Leisure Services Committee meeting from Cllr Beth Adger, seconded by Cllr. Tommy Nicholl, and received unanimous backing.

Speaking afterwards, Mrs Adger said: “The issue of a skatepark first came about back in 2006 when Tommy was Mayor and a petition of over 2000 names was handed in to Council supporting it. This has been a long while in coming and we’re tickled pink!

“It will be an indoor park purpose built for skateboard and BMX and will cost around £1.2m but,” she added, “£350,000 has already been set aside for it in this year’s rates.

“The Council will now work with ACUSA (Antrim County Urban Sports Association) to get this moving and get more funding”.

Once the SkatePark is in place, Cllr Adger believes it will boost the economy and profile of Ballymena.

“This will bring tourism to the borough i- t will be great for Ballymena,” she said. The committee’s recommendation will go before the next full council meeting in May.
