Speak out on social housing allocation

Do you have something to say about social housing and the way homes are allocated?

If so, the Department of Social Development would like to hear from you by Tuesday, March 4.

DSD Minister Nelson McCausland, delivering on a commitment set out in his housing strategy, commissioned independent research on this issue and three research reports, prepared by the Universities of Ulster and Cambridge, have been published and provide independent recommendations on the future of social housing allocations.

Mr McCausland said: “These proposals deserve open debate and engagement before we move forward. We need to build a sustainable social housing sector for future generations and I want everyone to have their say on how we can achieve this.”

Co-author of the reports, Paddy Gray of the University of Ulster said: “Our recommendations are focused on making the allocations systems more transparent, fair and easy to understand, so that everyone can engage with it.

People should be empowered to make informed decisions about their housing options and have clear information about what is available. Changing the allocations system is a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity and we need a system that can deliver for those in need for years to come.”

There will be public events to discuss the reports in Belfast on January 21, Derry on January 22 and Craigavon on January 31. To register your interest call 028 9082 9276 or contact [email protected]
