Spring garden show

THE members of Ballymena Garden Club will be holding their 85th Annual Spring Flower Show on Saturday, April 28, in Broughshane Community Centre.

The Show, which is organised in conjunction with Broughshane and District Community Association Ltd, will be open for viewing from 2-4pm with the prize distribution at 3pm and special guest this year will be Deputy Mayor, Alderman Robin Cherry MBE.

The daffodil exhibits are one of the mainstays of the show when members of the Northern Ireland Daffodil Group compete for awards. On this occasion it’s the Club’s turn to host the competition for the Group’s Silver Thread Award which is awarded for the best exhibit of three vases of daffodils, three flowers in each vase covering at least three divisions.

As well as the numerous daffodil classes there are classes devoted to foliage and flowering pot plants, cacti and succulents, and cut flowers. The Floral Art Section provides classes where exhibitors use plant materials to create exhibits which are their interpretations of the assignments set in the schedule.

The Schools and Young Persons Section gives an opportunity for young people to show their creative talent in classes with artistic and practical gardening themes.

Afternoon teas will be available and there will be an opportunity to purchase plants from a well-stocked stall where an extensive range of garden, house and greenhouse plants grown by members will be available to buy at keen prices.

You don’t need to be a Club member to exhibit. There are classes which suit first-time exhibitors including a daffodil class which requires only one bloom picked from your garden, and it doesn’t have to be a named variety!
