Storm power cuts affected 9,400

Figures just released by NIE on Thursday’s storm power outages have revealed that 9,400 customers were affected in the Ballymena region.

Around 34,000 people province-wide suffered power cuts during the recent severe weather according to the official figures and Ballymena, which includes Draperstown, Portglenone and Carnlough, had one of the highest customer affected levels.

Julia Carson, Communications Manager at Northern Ireland Electricity said: “We worked closely with the Met Office to prepare for this event which saw gusts of over 70 miles per hour. We had teams in place early on Thursday morning and so were able to respond quickly when the storm hit. Customers across Northern Ireland were affected however communities on the East and North East suffered the most damage.”

Several hundred individual faults had to be repaired and extensive tree cutting, pole replacement and line restringing had to be carried out.
