Footpaths began to be cordoned off with cones, heralding the start of the much talked about Public Realm Scheme which will change the streetscape of Broughshane Street, Church Street, Ballymoney Street, and Wellington Street.

The project is being jointly funded with the Department for Social Development, which is contributing £2.6 million towards the overall cost.

An update was given behind closed doors last week to a meeting of Mid & East Antrim Council’s Economic Growth & Development Committee.

In a statement issued to The Times afterwards, however, a spokesperson said: “The Ballymena Public Realm scheme continues to progress. Council are pleased that the contractor is now on site. Council continues to work with key stakeholders, including town centre businesses to keep them updated on the works.”
