Time change safety advice from PSNI

WITH the time due to change this weekend, police say there is a need for all road users to make safety their number one priority this autumn.

Road Policing Constable Syd Henry said now was the time for drivers and pedestrians to take stock. He said: “One of the key priorities at this time of year is to see, and to be seen. Motorists must ensure that all lights on vehicles are kept clean and are in working order.

“Use dipped headlights, and not just sidelights. You may well be able to see the road ahead however switching on your dipped headlights will help other road users see you when lighting conditions deteriorate.

“It is also important for cyclists and pedestrians to ensure they are seen. Cyclists and pedestrians should wear something flourescent and/or reflective – high visibility jackets, waistcoats and belts are readily available at modest prices.

Parents should ensure that children who walk to or from school should wear something reflective on their clothes or school bags and like all pedestrians they should always walk facing the traffic.

“Joggers and people walking dogs should also heed this advice. Dog owners should consider reflective leads or collars for their pets”.

Constable Henry said one of the key contributions towards road safety is drivers adjusting their speed to the road conditions.

“That means taking account of the weather, the level of light and the condition and type of road.

“Slowing down gives more time to react and could be the difference between stopping in time and becoming involved in a collision,” he said.
