The alert at Cambridge Avenue is now over.
Local residents have returned to their homes.
Ballymena councillor John Carson, who was at the scene, said he had been told the incident had been the result of an ‘elaborate hoax.’
Cambridge Avenue had been closed to traffic. It is understood the device was found near a postbox.
It is only some two weeks since a similar event caused distress to local people. At that time police revealed the device was an ‘improvised firework’.
There is no official confirmation but sources say the item discovered tonight ‘seems to be more eleborate’.
There are no further details at this time about the current situation..
