Video: Lights Out WW1 event in Ballymena

Around 100 people gathered in Ballymena’s Memorial Park on Monday evening to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War One.

Those taking part in the ceremony had been asked to light candles which would then be extinguished at 11pm to cooincide with the time, 100 years ago, when Britain declared war on Germany.

Sir Edward Grey, the Foreign Secretary of the time, summed up the historic moment with the words: “The lamps are going out all over Europe ..”

It would be four long years before a glimmer of peace re-emerged.
