Video: Organisers discuss the Giro d’Italia

Three of the key organisers of the upcoming Giro d’Italia event have spoken to the News Letter about the challenges surrounding the event.

The world’s media, along with tens of thousands of foreign tourists, will attend the three-day stage of the race in Northern Ireland on May 9 to 11.

On Tuesday, it was announced that election posters will be banned from the route of the race - which will include parts of Belfast, Co Antrim, and Co Armagh - in a bid to improve the presentation of the race route.

However, the route is still expected to take riders past murals such as the newly-painted UVF gunmen on the Lower Newtownards Road.

Despite the difficulties involved in planning the sporting event, it has been hailed as being a massive boon to Northern Ireland, bigger still than last year’s World Police and Fire Games.
