Woman threatened to jump from train

A BALLYMENA woman threatened to commit suicide by jumping off a train at the town's railway station, the local Magistrates Court has heard.

Margaret O’Hara (20), of Francis Street, but who is currently serving a prison sentence, was jailed for six weeks after admitting two counts of breaching an Anti-Social Behaviour Order and a further charge of disorderly behaviour.

The court was told that police were called to Ballymena railway station on January 2 after reports that a woman was threatening to jump off a train.

She was abusive towards police and continually threatened to commit suicide. O’Hara’s behaviour was upsetting to other passengers and she had to be forcibly removed from the scene.

The court was also told that on January 3, police were called to a domestic dispute involving O’Hara and her sister during which the defendant climbed out the window of a first floor flat and said she wanted to die.

When she was arrested, O’Hara lay on the floor banging her head and had to be carried to the door.

Solicitor John McAtamney said there were “clear mental health issues” relating to the defendant.

Deputy District Judge Philip Mateer said the six-week sentence would not interfere with O’Hara’s scheduled release date from prison.
