Popular budget supermarket Lidl has announced a new customer discount scheme, which is now available to download as an app.

The scheme will include a rewards club which promises hefty discounts on Lidl branded food as well as cinema tickets, Sky TV and Sky broadband.

In addition, customers can access weekly coupons and scratch cards which offer discounts ranging from 25p to £20 on their weekly shop in-store.

The app, named Lidl Plus, will work in a similar way to rival schemes like Tesco Clubcard and Nectar, offering rewards each time it's scanned at the checkout. It will be the first time the German retailer has run a loyalty scheme.

The flagship offering will be the digital scratch card which becomes available each time a customer makes a purchase and offers a range of discounts on the next shop.

Single-use coupons will be available on a weekly basis, with discounts of up to 25% on certain products. They will expire two weeks from the date they're activated.

Coupons can additionally be built up, allowing customers to spend once they reach a certain target.

Special offers from Lidl's partners will be available in the form of products and services such as 40% off cinema tickets.

The app will also allow shoppers to store their digital receipts in one place, as well as browse seasonal magazines and leaflets digitally.

Christian Härtnagel, chief executive at Lidl GB said:

"Our customers know that we offer the best quality products at market leading prices. We've designed Lidl Plus so we can provide an even better, tailored, shopping experience for our customers, as well as to thank them for their loyalty."

Lidl Plus can be downloaded from the App Store  or on Google Play.

You'll need to register some details such as a phone number and email address to activate it.
