Aces notch another trophy in dream season

TRIANGLE Aces have enjoyed a dream debut season in the Ballymena and District Snooker league (sponsored by Arkmedia).

Having claimed the Division 1 league title a few weeks back, the Coleraine side added the Robert McFall Memorial Trophy with a 5-3 win over Minnesota B last week.

Adrian Toner beat Andrew Hutchinson 2-0 to put the Aces ahead but a similar result for Minnesota’s Davy Swann - aided by a 63 break against Daniel McAuley - helped restore parity at the midway point.

The break by Davy wasn’t the highest of the final however as Willie Boreland took centre stage with an impressive couple of frames against Minnesota captain Willie Dobbin.

The Coleraine man had already pulled back his 20 point starting deficit in the first frame before he produced a brilliant 84 clearance to edge his side back in front.

A similarly dominant performance from Boreland in frame 2 meant that Triangle Aces were a mere frame from claiming their second trophy of the season.

Although David McClintock kept Minnesota in the match with an opening frame win on the black against Marc Hutchinson the Aces player hit back to take the second and secured the win for the Triangle side.

Marc Hutchinson had been involved in the decisive frame in the Knockout Cup semi final as Aces secured a place in another final with a 5-3 win over Parochial Lions.

Adrian Toner beat Gregory Bryans 2-0 and with Daniel McAuley and Willie Boreland gaining draws against Richard Russell and Rodney McAleese it was left Marc needing a frame from his match with Anthony Mitchell to book the Aces place in the final. Anthony raced away with the opening frame but Marc held his nerve to take the second.

Triangle Aces will play Minnesota Strikers in the Knockout Cup Final after the second division Strikers ousted their Minnesota A clubmates in a tight contest.

Hugh Larkin’s 2-0 win over Matthew McFall and Ruairi Meban who gained a creditable draw with Rodney McFall meant Strikers had a 3-1 half-time lead. Stephen McFall brought the ‘A’ team back to within a frame after taking the opening frame against Bill McKane only for Trevor Alexander to extend Strikers’ advantage after his opening frame win against Robin Shirley.

Robin hit back potting a great pink and black to take the second frame leaving the match outcome depending on the final frame of the Stephen McFall/Bill McKane game.

The Strikers player opened up a healthy lead and although Stephen got the necessary snooker, he required a fluked blue from Bill gave Strikers the win and a second appearance in a final for the season.
