ATT Club hosts Mid-Antrim Championships

Over the past the weekends, Kells-based ATT club hosted the first ever Mid Antrim Junior Championships.

The championships are Tennis Ireland ranking events and attracted players from all over the province to the borough of Ballymena.

In the under-14 championships, top seed in the boys singles event was Ross McMaster from ATT club, who has reached the number one spot in both the Irish & Ulster rankings this year.

Second seed in the boys was Will Millar from Windsor tennis club, the boys also played together in the doubles event.

The top 2 seeds in the boys singles reached the final without dropping a game in their semi final matches, where top seed Ross McMaster defeated Ben Doherty from Windsor club 6-0 6-0.

Will Millar beat Alexandros stergiopoulos from Letterkenny LTC 6-0 6-0.

The u14 girls singles final contested on sun by briege McCarry from Ballycastle club and Grace Whaley from Irvinestown tennis club. Grace claimed the girls u14 singles title with a 6-3 6-1 win over Breige.

The u14 boys singles consolation final was between Jonah Lennox from ATT club & Cain McDonnell from boat club LTC. Caine claimed victory in the end 6-1 1-6 7-6 (7-4).

This was followed by the u14 boys doubles final won by top seeds Will & Ross 6-2 6-2 over Ben Doherty & Cain McDonnell.

Boys u-14 singles final between Will Millar OF Windsor LTC & Ross McMaster of ATT Club, it was a well contested final with some quality tennis on show & played in good spirit.

Ross became the Mid Antrim champion with a 6-3 6-2 win.

UNDER-12

Finals day at the Mid Antrim junior u12 Championships took place last Sunday.

The consolation boys singles round robin competition was won by Caolan McCarroll from ATT club who was undefeated, only dropping three games.

Main event of the day, boys u12 singles final was a great match between number one seed Freddy Murray (David Lloyd Belfast) and second seed Josh Cree (Hawarden LTC).

Freddy took control of the match winning the first set 6-1 but Josh fought hard to get himself back in the match pushing Freddy all the way in the second set, but Freddy held his nerve was crowned the Mid Antrim Champion with a 6-1 6-4 victory.

The final match of the day was the u12 boys doubles final and it was a cracker!

It had the spectators on the edge of their sets with momentum swings all the way through, neither partnerships giving up on the title.

Caolan McCarroll & Fergal McKeirnan took the opening set 6-4, Josh Cree & Jamie Lyall took the second set 6-2.

The match was then decided by an epic champions tie break!

Each pair saved a match point before finally josh & jamie claimed victory 12-10 wining their second match point with a huge round of applause from everyone court side - a great way to end the championships!

The organisers have thanked all the competitors for taking part and their great sportsmanship throughout the event.
