“Too many people to thank but everyone associated with the boxing club player their part.

“Gerry Hamill and Tony McAvoy, this is for you as much as me for the years of work.

“I started off at 13 years old and I’ve had ups and downs like everyone has but I came back and never gave up and now I’m off to represent Ireland at the Games.”

With regard to the sporting spectacle in Rio, Steven wrote: “What will be will be.

“The work is nearly all done and I will hit my peak in Rio and the dream starts.

“In advance I’ll thank each and every one of you for your comments, good luck, cards etc - I’ll see them all after.

“Tune in and enjoy the ride, I can’t wait - time to shine,” added Steven.

Prior to his departure, Steven received a cheque from Tony McAvoy, proceeds from a fund-raising boxing night held for the Olympian in the Adair Arms recently.
