SPORTS AWARDS: Boxer Steven '˜ready to rock' at Olympics

Steven Donnelly insists he will be 'ready to rock' at this summer's Olympic Games after winning the Adult Sportsperson of the Year award.

The Ballymena boxer, who began his career with the local All Saints club at the age of 12, saw his career reach its pinnacle so far in 2015 when he secured qualification for next year’s Games in Brazil.

Steven, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in the 2014 games in Glasgow, has also been competing for the Polish Rafako Hussars team in the World Series of Boxing.

Aside from his own commitments, Steven continues to train with All Saints and is always happy to pass on his knowledge and expertise to the club’s younger members.

“The Olympics are the biggest sporting event on earth and by the time Rio comes, I’ll be ready to rock,” said Steven, who received his award from Francis Scullion, of sponsors Ballymena Credit Union.

Also short-listed: Erin Smith (bowls); Eileen Burns (cycling).
