Both teams progressed to the next round with the Under 12s seeing off Irish league Academy side, Cliftonville and the 15s winning against Hillsborough Boys, courtesy of an extra time winner from Rhys O’Mullan.

The Under 16s got back to winning ways against Glendowan with birthday boy Matthew Shevlin back in action with a two goal salvo. Only the Under 13s lost out on Saturday to Oak Athletic. The Under 9s, 10s and 11s are all currently on their winter break in the North West Youth League. The Under 10s enjoyed a rare chance for home action when they played a small friendly tournament with teams that included North Belfast, Ballymena Utd YA and North End Utd at Ballymena Showgrounds.

Carniny Youth 6 - 3 Cliftonville: Carniny tried a new formation in this game and it paid off immediately when Lewis Mearns finished well into the corner when put in by Scott Hunter to make it 1-0.

Scott Hunter a simple tap in at the back post to make it 2-0. Craig Simpson then won a penalty which Jake White stroked into the corner to make it 3-0. Aidan Graffin worked hard on the left and he got his rewards when he blasted in Carniny’s fourth from just outside the box to make it 4-0. Cliftonville then got one back, it was Lee Lynn who finished Carniny’s scoring off in the first half.

Nicholas Moore came on up front and caused the Cliftonville defence some problems.

Lee Lynn then got his trade mark free kick goal to make it 6-1 Carniny. Carniny then took their foot off the gas and allowed Cliftonville 2 quick goals to close the gap but the game was already over at this stage.

Carniny Youth 0 - 4 Oak Athletic: Oak took the lead with a nice move and low strike into the corner of the goal. Carniny conceded a penalty from a handball. The striker made no mistake.

Committing players forward in search of goals ran the risk conceding and this proved costly with Oak adding two in quick succession.

Carniny Youth 2-1 Hillsborough Boys: It came as no surprise therefore when the away side took the lead after 15 minutes when poor marking allowed the striker to convert with a cross shot which crept in off the post.

A little piece of magic half way through half brought Carniny back into the game when Jordan Hassan played a superb through ball into the path of Conor Doherty who smashed the ball into the bottom corner. In the first minute of the additional Hillsborough looked certain to score when their pacey striker burst through but McClean made a great save and the rebound crept just wide. Rhys O’Mullan with a glorious chance. He showed great composure in slotting the ball into the net to give Carniny a welcome, if probably undeserved place in the third round.

Carniny Youth 3 - 0 Glendowan: It wasn’t long before Carniny took the lead when a cross from the right was headed into the Glendowan net by Tyrone Balmer. Matthew Shevlin made it 2-0 to Carniny when he scored with a low crisp shot into the bottom corner of the Glendowan goal.

At the start of the second half it was again Glendowan who started the brighter and it took good defending from Price, Wojtowicz, Rowe and Platt and smart and alert goalkeeping from Marquess to keep the score at 2-0. Carniny as in the first half started to take control of the game in midfield and had several chances to increase their lead from Shevlin, Balmer and McWilliams but these were well saved by the Glendowan keeper. With ten minutes to go Carniny sealed the win when birthday boy Matthew Shevlin netted his second with a well taken goal to leave the final score 3-0. This was a good win for Carniny as several of their panel were unavailable.
