Colin aiming for title glory at King’s Hall

BALLYMENA fighter Colin Robinson hopes he can take a step towards a return to the pinnacle of mixed martial arts - the Ultimate Fighting Championship - this weekend.

The 42-year-old takes on Neil ‘Old School’ Wain for the Cage Contender Heavyweight title at the King’s Hall this Saturday night.

And while that bout is uppermost in Robinson’s mind, he admits that a return to the UFC, where he became the only Irish fighter to compete in the heavyweight division, remains a target.

“If I beat him it will open up doors for me again,” says the man known as ‘Big C’.

People from the UFC will be watching and if I beat Wain and then win another couple of fights I will be right back in there again.

“The feeling I had walking out that night in Belfast to the Octogon on the UFC show was probably the best feeling I’ve ever had,

“Everything in the UFC is just 100% professional. You’re looked after. There’s somebody to do everything for you. They put you up in a top class hotel five days before the fight. If you need anything they’re there to get it for you.

“They have people there advising you on what to say on the cameras. You’ve never seen people looking after you as well in your life.

“All you have to do is make weight and fight. I want to get back to fighting on the UFC shows again,” he added.

“The game plan is to win and to knock him out. I want to keep the striking going, because that is what the crowd wants to see.

“We are both good at that, so we will both go in and throw shots.

“He is a bully in the ring, so if I throw loads of combinations and keep him off balance, I will be able to keep him on the back foot.

“He likes to come forward, so if I put him on the back foot, I will stop him.

“Training has never been better and I am in the shape of my life. My hands are faster than they have ever been, which is great.

“There should be a big crowd and I am looking forward to fighting at the King’s Hall.

“I boxed when I was younger, so the King’s Hall was the ultimate place to fight for me.

“I love fighting at home, I love fighting in Belfast and I have not had the chance to do it that often, so I am really looking forward to it.”
