Contrasting outcomes in pool league ‘derby’ ties

The two ‘derby’ fixtures in last week’s Ballymena Towers Pool League schedule produced totally contrasting fortunes.

While Moat ‘A’ and ‘B’ could not be separated in their tussle, it was a different story in Ahoghill where Fairhill Hustlers had too much know-how for their Rockets club-mates.

Fairhill Rockets 0, Fairhill Hustlers 6: Rab Graham got Hustlers off to a good start with a 2-1 win over Linzi McClelland. George McCullough made the match score 2-0 to the Hustlers with a win in straight frames. In the third game Gary Allen won the first game for the Rockets against Ritchie Irwin, but Ritchie fought back to win 2-1 for the Hustlers. The fourth game went the same way with Ian Dewar winning the first game only for Glenn Mairs to fight back and win 2-1. The last two games were both 2-0 wins for Hustlers through Justin Kilpatrick and Sean Brannigan to complete the whitewash.

Minnesota Inbetweeners 2, Connollys 4: John McAllister and Ryan Foster got the ball rolling for Connollys with wins in straight frames over Ryan Logan and Marc Higgins. Inbetweeners hit back and Gary Ormandy had a 2-1 win over Don McKeown and then Dessie Cooper levelled the match score.

In the fifth game Alan Davidson had a 2-0 win over Phil Houston which included an 8ball clearance. In the final game Gary Clarke also had an 8ball clearance in his 2-0 win over Gareth Rowe to inflict a first defeat of the season on the champions.

Michelin Masters 4, Towers Tavern 2: David Armstrong got Michelin off to a winning start and Chris Penny doubled their lead before KD Crabbe cut the deficit.

Alan Armstrong and Brian Hanna put the game beyond Towers but the Ballee side claimed a second point through Drew Sloan.

Moat ‘A’ 3, Moat ‘B’ 3: The Moat derby produced a shock with the B team drawing with the A team.

Indeed, the ‘B’ team may feel they should have won, having led on three separate occasions through Steven Magill, William Wilson and Dean Robinson, but the ‘A’ team battled back to draw thanks to Darren Campbell, Alan Rainey and Jason McKay. BUSC 2, Coach Bar 4: Coach raced into a 3-0 lead through Darren Gilmore, Frazer Young and Aidy Rourke before Albert McBride opened Social Club’s account. Chris Gordon quickly dampened Social’s hopes of a combeack but they had the final word with a win for Brian Boyd in the last game,
