Colgan's 96 steers Seconds to victory

Colgan took his season's runs tally with the Seconds to 392 with a hard-hitting and undefeated 96 that included a dozen boundaries as Ballymena amassed 261 for six after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Colgan, without doubt one of the best batsmen at this level in the NCU, was ably supported by David Montgomery, who dominated an opening partnership of 86 with Richard White (18) on his way to his first half century of the season. The opener's 53 included nine boundaries, most of which dispatched through deep square leg.

While Colgan and Montgomery were the stars of an impressive batting display, Philip Harshaw - on his first Second XI appearance of the season - also played a vital role. He impressed off the back foot on his way to 32 and shared a fourth wicket partnership with Colgan of 91 in 15 overs.

Ballymena's total was always a good one, but on such a good track with a fast outfield anything was possible for the hosts as they set off in their reply.

Luckily for the visitors they had two opening bowlers in White and Fergus Taylor who were intent on getting the match finished early.

White removed both openers in his second over to leave Bangor three for two and Taylor clean bowled Millar to make it 13 for three soon after.

The only resistance came from Gary Morton, who's hard hitting style saw White concede 27 runs in three overs, but Taylor was not to be treated in the same way and when he bowled Morton for 42, Bangor were 67 for five and the game was over.

Taylor finished with three for 25 off seven, while White bowled straight through his ten overs picking up three wickets at a cost of 41.

Some late order runs from Stewart and Hutchinson saw Bangor get into three figures but they were eventually dismissed for just 138 with some 18 overs unused.

This Saturday, Ballymena Seconds host local rivals Muckamore in a re-arranged league game starting at 12 noon. Because this was a match abandoned earlier in the season it will be a 20-over game, so expect plenty of fireworks.
