Cyclist Ryan a top ten hit!

THE Ulster 100 miles and junior 25 miles time trial championships, which were hosted by Bann Wheelers, took place last Sunday, 25th September, at Woodgreen.

The 100 miles event was held between Woodgreen, Dunsilly and Ballee with each “lap” of approximately 15 miles being completed seven times. Conditions were very difficult for the 21 entrants, with a tough headwind to contend with on the stretch from Ballee to Dunsilly.

Ballymena Road Club – Northstone – rider Ryan Currie completed what has been an excellent season, by taking a creditable tenth position, with a time of 4 hours 24 minutes 01 seconds. Ballycastle’s John Madden was challenged all the way by Bryan Mc.Crystal (Cuchullain) but eventually won both the senior and veterans’ categories with a time of 3 hours 56 minutes 23 seconds.

FUN TOUR’S ‘ROUTE 66’

The biggest turnout of this season’s Ballymena Road Club – Northstone – “Fun Tour” series assembled at Rex Bonar house on Saturday morning, with a total of 66 riders heading out in two groups.

The 35 strong touring section group took full advantage of the warm and sunny conditions and headed for the coast.

Their route took in Broughshane, Buckna, Hazelbank, The Sheddings and then on to the Munie road and the descent of Glenarm glen to Glenarm village.

Then, after a short break, it was on towards Carnlough and left on to the four miles climb up Glencloy. The group had the wind in their faces on the return leg, in through the Braid and Aughafatten, but it was well worth the effort.

The touring group has been riding very well so far in the series and Saturday’s run is normally considered at least a silver standard, and isn’t normally tackled after just three weeks, but nevertheless everyone was more than capable of completing the 38 miles challenge.

It’s also great to see so many ladies joining the fun tour groups; there were ten ladies present on Saturday and they had no trouble keeping up with the pace of the bunch.

The “A” group had a 54 miles tour to Toomebridge, Ballyronan, Moneymore, Tobermore, Maghera, Clady, Portglenone and up Tully climb and home via Ahoghill, completed, I am told at 19.5mph average.

Another £75 was collected for the charity fund which already stands at £682.
