Denis comes out top on day of hot scoring at Raceview

The top six nett scores were 40-plus returns, the best of them coming from Denis Stewart with 43 points, but only by virtue of a better second nine hole total from Paul McAtamney.

Playing off 17, Stewart parred the first three holes, only to drop two shots at the fourth, but he then completed the front nine with two pars and a trio of bogeys for 21 points.

The back nine was steady where he recorded two pars plus a birdie on the 14th along with six single bogeys as he added a further 22 points to his tally.

McAtamney (24) had a dream start as he birdied the opening two holes for seven points while a par at the third hole took him to double figures and even though he dropped seven shots over the next six holes, he still reached the turn with 24 points on his card.

But Paul could not sustain that high level of scoring and he was only able to add a further 19 points, which saw him edged out for the top prize.

Chris Worthington was the third-placed competitor with 42 points, of which 22 came from the front nine, with the highlight of the 19-handicapper’s round coming with an eagle on the par five ninth hole.

Des McCartney (15) claimed the fourth nett prize by virtue of having a single point advantage from the next two returns. A non-score on the penultimate hole might have been costly had he not then birdied the final hole for 21 points, to add to his earlier 20.

Fifth nett was William Montgomery (23) with 40 points and on a better second nine from Billy Greer.

William only managed 17 points on the front nine but he came strongly on the second nine as he notched 23 points, dropping seven shots to par.

The final nett prize was won by Greer (12) who claimed 20 points from each nine, which included birdies at the 14th and 16th holes.

The best gross card came from 16 handicapper Paddy Kearney who toured the course in level par 68 shots. His round included birdies at the first, fourth, seventh and 15th holes.

SUNDAY OPEN

The Sunday open stableford was won by David Smith (6) with 42 points, 21 on both the front and back nines.

Second prize went to John Hood (21) with 41 points, 23 of them coming on the homeward stretch, while Eugene M Reid (18) was third with 38 points. Best gross was won by John A Jamieson with a round of seven over par.

WEDNESDAY OPEN

David Smith completed a ‘double’ as the also won the Wednesday open with a total of 43 points from a round of two under par gross.

Adam Robinson (19) was second with 38 points, while Paul Rodgers (12) was third.
