BALLYMENA Rugby Club’s First XV continue the countdown to their new season with two warm-up games this week.

On Thursday night, John Andrews’ side entertain the Ulster under-20 XV, while on Saturday, newly-crowned All-Ireland League Division 1A champions Old Belvedere are visitors to Eaton Park.

The matches will allow Andrews an opportunity to fine-tune his panel as they prepare for a season which will see them return to the second tier of Irish rugby – Division 1B – following a successful Division Two promotion campaign last term.

The Braidmen have been busy recruiting players but they also have to cope with the loss of three of their most explosive backs for the season ahead.

“We’ve tried to stop the traffic outwards but a few players have gone on to good opportunities,” Andrews told Times Sport.

“Jamie Smith and Tommy Seymour, both Ulster players, have moved on to Glasgow and Gwent Dragons. That’s a blow for us but we wish them well because they have served us well over the past couple of years.

“Roger McBurney has also been given an opportunity of a three-month trial with Gwent Dragons - he is a cracking big player and he would be a loss to any squad.

“Those three guys were our firepower behind the scrum but we’re still looking at maybe bringing in an overseas player to replace that,” added John.
