Drivers stay up to speed with Racepod simulator

BALLYMENA Raceway drivers have found a novel new way of keeping themselves up to speed during the long winter break - Racepod simulator racing!

Running off eight computers, the Racepods are run by Wayne Douglas, a former Irish Opel Lotus Champion who raced on Ireland’s big circuits at Kirkistown and Mondello Park.

He teamed up with local racer Ryan Wright who runs the Fairhill, and over 50 of the local racing fraternity turned out for what was an excellent evenings entertainment.

The action takes place on a realistic simulation of the Foxhall Raceway in Ipswich, with the drivers competing in National Hot Rod spec cars whilst sitting in the Racepods which feature realistic seats, steering wheels and pedals. It really is as close to the real thing as it gets.

National Hot Rod Irish Open Champion Glenn Bell from Portadown was the ultimate winner on the night, coming through late on in the final to snatch the win after teenage Stock Rods star Carl Sloan from Kells had led until very late in the race.

Antrim rally man Drew Stewart was also well in contention in the final, with other great showings in the feature race from National Hot Rodder Adam Maxwell and local Junior Rod racer Marc Morrell.

More events will be arranged in the near future, and more information can be found at www.racepods.net
