Alexander hits hat-trick as Strollers win ‘derby’

Wakehurst Strollers secured the bragging rights in the first all-Ballymena match of the season in the Ballymena & Provincial League.

John Alexander hit a hat-trick as the Ballymena side defeated Clough Rangers Athletic 4-0 at the Showgrounds 3G to joing the early leaders at the top of Junior Division Two.

In the intermediate division, Chimney Corner secured their first point of the season after a 1-1 draw with Castle Star.

INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE

Chimney Corner 1, Castle Star 1: Castle had the first clear chance in the game when awarded a penalty on the 15th minute but missed the opportunity when the shot hit the post and spun to safety.

Both teams than had a couple of chance before Jordan Walker scored for Corner on the 34th minute putting them in front at half-time.

Castle came back to equalise after Warren Brown scored on the 65th minute and at the end a draw was a fair result.

Other results: Magherafelt Sky Blues 2, Desertmartin 2; Rathcoole FC 2, Ballynure Old Boys 1.

Results: Cookstown RBL 0, Ballyclare Comrades Reserves 1; FC Whiteabbey 3, Carnmoney FC 1; Magherafelt Sky Blues Reserves 1, Cookstown Olympic 0.

JUNIOR DIVISION TWO

Wakehurst Strollers 4, Clough Rangers Athletic 0: It was an ex Clough player, Paul Gilchrist, who scored on the 20th minute who put Strollers in front.

Half-time came and this goal still separated the teams until John Alexander scored a second for Strollers on the 55th minute.

Clough tried hard to get back in the game but the day belonged to Alexander who scored two more to complete his hat-trick on the 72nd and 81st minutes.

CANADA TROPHY, ROUND ONE

Antrim Rovers 4, Moyola Park Olympic 2: Antrim went in front after Jonny Rogers scored on the 23rd minute and followed this with a second goal scored by Tommy Bownes on the 25th minute.

Darren Brammeld made it 3-0 on the 35th minute and then scored his second on the 65th minute to make it four. Moyola rallied with two goals on the 80th and 84th minute but it was too late.
