Bad week for veterans' sides

LAST Monday Ballymena Vets 2 travelled to Belfast to play Falls. Both teams had a rink win but the home team claimed the bonus points with a slender 1 shot victory (30-29).

On rink 3 Gary Shaw, Derek Greer, Peter Millar and Arnold Kenny were drawn against D Cregan. The home rink made the better start winning 6 of the first 7 ends to open up an 8 shot lead however the Ballymena men fought back and by the time they had reached the 13th end the visitors only trailed by a shot.

Thirteen proved unlucky for the visiting rink as they could only win one more end, with the Falls rink claiming victory by 16 shots to 12.

It was a different story on rink 4 where Keith Burnett, Alan Stewart, Robert McCready and Robert Mark took on G Lowe.

This time it was the visitors who started well when they won 8 of the first 11 ends to open up 10 shot lead. Unfortunately the Braid men could not maintain their good run of form as the home rink outscored their opponents by 10 shots to 3 to reduce the deficit to 3 shots and leave the final score reading 17-14 in favour of the visitors.

Ballymena Veterans IV 21, Carrickfergus III 43: Ballymena Vets 4 took on Carrickfergus last week, however it was not a good day for the Braid men who drew on one rink and were well beaten on the other.

Sammy Rainey, Jimmy Maybin, Joe McKernan and Jim Cameron never really got started against the Carrickfergus rink skipped by S Reid on rink 2.

It was the 6th end before the Ballymena men got on to the scoreboard and by that time they trailed by 11 shots. The visitors continued to dominate proceedings and in the end they went on to claim a very comfortable 28-6 victory.

On rink 3 Jimmy Alexander, Clifford Duncan, Roy Kernohan and Jackie Barr made a good start against D Gilbert on rink 3 when they won 6 of the first 8 ends to open up a 10 shot lead.

Unfortunately the whole complexion of the game changed over the next two ends when the Braid men conceded counts of 6 and 2 to leave the Carrick rink only 2 shots behind.

The remainder of the game was a low scoring affair and a single on the last end in favour of the visitors saw them claim an unlikely draw with the score board reading 15-15.
